Do you want to be a Town Councillor?

20190128 100517 0001

Many ask what it means to be a Councillor. This question will be answered at an Information Session on Saturday, 2 February at the Town Hall, Station Road, Ilkley LS29 8HB.

On Thursday, 2 May 2019 the seats of all 14 Ilkley Town Councillors will be up for election. It is an exciting time.

It is thought that several councillors will not be standing for re-election. All the seats of all the councillors are also open for election, of course. This is a good chance for new candidates to step forward and ask the residents of Ilkley to elect them.

The Mayor of Ilkley, Cllr Steve Butler, will be in attendance, with other councillors to explain what goes on in the Town Hall.

As a councillor you will be a community leader with the power to influence decisions for the benefit of the people you serve. You will see the benefits of the work you do over time, perhaps not immediately, but definitely over the four years of your term of office.

Anybody over 18 can stand for election so long as they meet a number of simple criteria which will be discussed on the day. The candidates have to be nominated and go through the election process, not necessarily but usually with a link to a political party.

Potential candidates usually have a number of questions such as how much time will it take up, how many years does a councillor serve, what are their duties and how powerful are they? There is information on the Town Council website at: www.towncouncil.ilkley.org.

Everything will be explained in more detail on Saturday, 2 February at the Town Hall. There is no need to book in advance - just turn up any time between 11am and 1pm.
